It was Trent's turn to wake up bright and early with their screaming toddler. He fed her potato chips for breakfast because he didn't have the patience to deal with her throwing another meal she didn't like on the floor.
The household chores had been piling up. There was so much to do now that they were parents and never enough time in the day. More time was spent cleaning up Ashton's messes than doing anything else.
Feeling happy about her junk-food breakfast, Ashton decided to behave in the tub and only splashed a little, at first. Though she quickly got out of hand and Trent was soaked before the end.
It was OK though; he needed a long soak in the tub to help him relax. Lately he'd been feeling stressed about Ashton's poor behavior and worried about not having time to earn the money they badly needed.
"Um Trent?" Amie called to him in the bathroom, "Why is there a naked toddler wandering around the house?"
"I swear she had clothes on when I left her," he laughed, having loosened up enough to regain his sense of humor. Ashton had a tendency to strip and run around whenever she felt hyper.
After the morning chaos, Trent set to work cleaning up last night's messes while Ashton praised her wonderfulness in the mirror.
"Now Ashy, you need learn to say sorry when you make a mistake. It makes people feel sad when you don't say sorry." Trent attempted to instill some manners into his rambunctious girl.
Ashton regarded him dubiously wondering why she ought to care how others feel. The world revolved around her, after all.
In the end, she decided it was best to just smile and nod. Whatever her daddy was saying , he wouldn't stop until she pretended to understand.
Eating time continued to be play time for Ashton though. Nothing her parents had tried so far seemed to impact her behavior in a positive way.
"Why Ash?" Amie growled in a moment of frustration. "Why do you always throw your food on the floor? I know you're hungry." Amie had fed Ash several times that day already because Ashton would take only a bite or two before flinging her meal into the air. Well that's it, Amie decided, she's going to bed hungry.
Ashton was not happy when she was removed from her highchair without being given more food. She was still hungry and threw a huge fit to prove it.
Because of her bad behavior, Ashton was told that she needed to put herself to sleep tonight while daddy read her favorite book to himself. This caused Ashton to cry; she couldn't sleep without her story!
After many tears and much begging, Ashton finally let Trent show her how to say sorry to mommy for throwing her dinner on the floor. Afterward, he helped her into bed with a kiss on the forehead and a twinkle of pride in his eye.
Ashton learned that saying sorry was sometimes the only way to get what she wanted. As much as she hated giving up some of her control, it did feel safe to trust mommy and daddy.
